Drones as a Weapon to Combat ISIS

russian drones in ukraine

Although the United States, Russia, as well as other countries, want to use modern aircraft more often, Ukraine lacks the resources necessary to train its troops on these aircraft. Although the Ukrainians have received training in Western countries such as Germany on vehicles and aircraft, they cannot receive the same training in Ukraine on drones. The Ukrainians are used a lot to trucks and older equipment, so drones are much easier for them to use. Drones are also easy to use for soldiers because they don't need "pilots". Drones also have an easy to use interface, much like those found in video games.

Aerorozvidka

The Ukrainian military uses a unique approach to combating ISIS in eastern Ukraine: octocopters equipped with thermal cameras for nighttime missions. Some drones can even light up columns and are equipped with anti-tank weapons. These drones can transport up to 11 pounds of payload. They are maneuverable. Because they are small, drones can be flown low and over targets to drop munitions.

Aerorozvidka began as an IT enthusiast group. It has since evolved into a military air reconnaissance unit. Although the organization started as a civil drone company, it grew into a fully-fledged unit with its head. The Ukrainian government banned Russian military aircraft from entering the country because of export controls. Since many of the components of the drones are manufactured in the US, Aerorozvidka relies on donations and crowdfunding to help keep the company going.

Switchblade

The U.S. military supplied Ukraine with the armed "Switchblade", drones that are capable of hitting Russian tanks hundreds of miles away. These unmanned aircraft vehicles were created by the US Air Force in response a Ukrainian request. John Kirby, a Pentagon spokesperson, stated that more than 120 of these machines are currently being sent to Ukraine. The Switchblades' use in the conflict in Ukraine is unknown.

The Switchblade is a small drone that is easy to launch from a tube and has a range of 40 kilometers. The Switchblade is able to hit a Russian convoy 6 miles away, which is unlike Bayraktar drones. In a conflict like Ukraine, these small aircraft can be set up in minutes. The Switchblade has a much higher speed than the Bayraktar, the current U.S. allies.

Russian kamikaze drones

The US has recently announced a $800million military aid package for Ukraine. One part of that package includes the delivery to Ukraine of 121 unmanned aircraft known as "Phoenix Ghosts," which will terrorize Russian forces. These unmanned aircraft are designed to fly over large areas for between 30 and 40 minutes. They are equipped both with warheads as well as cameras. Switchblade, a hovering munition of 5.5 pounds that can kill tanks and armored cars, is an example.

These lightweight aircrafts are small and light, and can operate from any location, whether it is land, air or sea. Any advantage an opponent has over their counterpart in an aerial battle like this is vital. Russian kamikaze aircrafts pose a threat to that advantage. This capability will likely be key to Ukraine's military, as it can easily break Russian sieges and attack command-and-control nodes. These capabilities would be a huge liability for both the sides but a small drone could prove to be an asset on the battlefield. Ukraine may emerge victorious.

U.S. drones left to loiter

Russia is integrating ZALA KYB loitering weapons into its military arsenal. These drones have the ability to use deadly loitering munition in the style of bazookas. These autonomous killing devices could spread to black markets through the use of loitering robots. But experts and observers are worried. What can the U.S. do?

Kirby reports that the U.S. government dispatched more then 121 Switchblade loitering drones to Ukraine to support Kiev's fight against Russian forces. The Switchblade drone can hover in a given area for between 30 and 40 minutes. It weighs in at 5.5 pounds. It includes a camera, a warhead and a microphone. It's intended mission is to attack the opposition forces in Ukraine.
