DJI Security Concerns

turkish drones in ukraine

The recent emergence of multiple DJI security concerns is troubling. Some believe that DJI may be harvesting sensitive information for China's government. The Department of Defense renewed its ban against DJI products in July due to national security concerns. The software applications of the company collect large amounts from its operator's smartphones, which is a feature that has been removed from many of its flight control apps.

Software applications by dji collect large amounts of personal information from an operator's smartphone.

Since its inception DJI has collected a lot of personal data from smartphone users, which the company could possibly use to spy against Americans. According to a former Pentagon official, the company is sending "sensitive data" to China, and the National Intelligence Law gives the Chinese government the power to compel DJI to disclose such information. However, the company claims that data is used solely for scientific research and isn't sold to China.

MobTech and Bugly components were removed from DJI flight control apps

MobTech, a component in DJI Android GO 4, collects personal data and runs in the background. The DJI privacy policies provide important information about how your data is used, but this component does not apply to the flight of your drone. MobTech has the right to collect sensitive data, such as your cellular operator's IMSI (mobile network operator ID), and can access your account.

WiFi authentication schema for DJI UAVs

DJI UAVs use a weak default WiFi authentication protocol. Bad actors could gain access to your personal information and control your drone using this vulnerability. There are many ways to protect your network connections. Here are some helpful tips.

DoD audit caused concern

DoD issued an audit earlier this month that raised questions about DJI drone security. Responding to the audit, the company stated that it would make sure the policy was being followed. DOD expressed concern about the company's recent listing in the Entity List. The U.S. Commerce Department has also classified the company as an alleged national security risk.

DJI states that its products are safe

China's National Security Law isn't the only concern with DJI drones. But it is an important one. It requires all organizations to share information and data with Chinese spies. This is a very important law, as few Western governments are able to trust Beijing. Therefore, governments should assume that the Chinese spy agencies will also value the data from DJI drones. DJI maintains that its products can be used safely and that any safety concerns are not related.
